Super Mario 3D Land sold over 5 million units and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword sold more than 3 million copies. If Nintendo hadn't revealed its losses, then some would assume that everything is going great financially, even if it isn't. This high number of software sales indicates a profitable Nintendo in the future. Click below the break to see all the titles selling more than one million. UPDATED: THQ has issued a statement regarding these rumors.
The original story:
Like everything else in America, even video games are suffering from these hard economic times. Rumors have been abound all over Twitter that THQ, developer of the Saints Row, UFC, Red Faction, and WWE series, is readying itself for sale by cancelling its 2014 catalog of games.
According to video game industry vet, Kevin Dent, THQ had cancelled it's latest MMO, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online, to ready itself for sale, because the company is worth only 66 cents, when this time last year it was worth $6 on the market, and the company needs cash.
We'll keep an eye on any other news related to economic turmoil.
Surprise, Surprise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the top selling game in 2011. The NPD released the sales charts earlier today for the top selling games of 2011, and last December. Unfortunately, NPD doesn't release the exact sales numbers, just the top selling games. Below are the top selling games for 2011, and December.
The Nintendo 3DS broke sales records in Japan for the most hardware sold during the Christmas season.
The system sold 1,492,931 units during the Christmas season
Interestingly enough, according to Enterbrain, the Playstation Vita also sold the second highest number of units with 402,794 during the month of December.
The Vita is not doing well at all in Japan. In the first week, the Vita sold a respectable 325,000 systems, still about 35,000 units short of the 3DS in the same time span. In its second week, the Vita sold pretty poorly, moving only about 70,000 units, when the 3DS sold almost 500,000. The numbers from Week 3 sales are in, and they're looking grim for the Vita.
Surprise! Nintendo has stated that in the first 9 months on the market the 3DS has sold more units than the Wii sold in its first 9 months. This is contrary to what most, including Nintendo, thought would happen. It seems like the sharp $80 price drop helped sell the 4 million systems sold this year.
It seems like this can be attributed partly to Mario. Both Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 each sold 1 million units. Not only that, but a small game called Zelda moved 1 million units as well, becoming the fastest selling Zelda game ever.
This news comes after it was revealed that the Vita sold less than the PSP, Wii, and 3DS in its second week sales.
Nintendo dominates sales in electronics in Japan, beating out the new Playstation Vita, which sold less than even the PSP
According to the Media Sales Create for the last week, the numbers are as follows:
Folks, the numbers are in. Although originally believed to have shipped 700,000 systems, Nikkei has reported that Sony has shipped 500,000 Vitas to retailers around Japan. It's been having a hard time selling, though. In the first two days after the Vita launched on the 17th, the system sold only 325,000 systems, selling 65% of the stock, according to Andriasang. This is almost double the PSP's 48 hour sales of 166,074 , but short of the 3DS' sales. The Vita sold about 35,000 units less than the 3DS, which sold 360,000 units in the first two days.
